is a physical and mental
approach to health and well-being. Developed in the early 20th
century by the
German-born Joseph Pilates, the method is a biomechanic- ally correct and highly effective training
programme. The exercises are executed on a mat with or without small
apparatus
such
as balls, foam rollers, magic circles, therabands and on special machines
originally designed by Pilates himself (Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Big
Barrel), cleverly constructed out of hospital beds and their springs.
Optimal
posture and joint alignment, enhanced balance, coordination and flexibility,
body awareness, healthy muscle tone, physical and mental relaxation are
achieved through following principles of the method:
CENTERING
- BREATHING - CONTROL - CONCENTRATION
The
Pilates Method of Exercise is recommendable for
everyone from the teenage to the senior years. The exercises vary from gentle to
highly challenging moves. The medical community highly approves
Pilates Training for people with spinal/back problems, pelvic floor related
imbalances, postural problems, stress-related disorders, during a non-risk
pregnancy and post-operative supplementary to physical therapy.
Born in 1880
near Düsseldorf, Germany, Joseph Hubertus Pilates was a rather sickly child
suffering from rheumatic fever, rickets and asthma. His determination to be
healthy led him to develop his own training regime, which he originally called
the Art of Contrology. Influential to his method
were his exposure to several disciplines like the martial arts, yoga,
gymnastics, weight training, skiing, diving and boxing.
In
1926, he immigrated to the USA. Upon arrival in New York, he opened a Pilates Studio. Among others, he met George
Balanchine and Martha Graham, two geniuses of the Dance World. They highly approved
of his method and sent their dancers to learn from him. Soon his
method grew in popularity. Among others famous actors, gymnasts
and athletes frequented his studio.
Today,
the Pilates Method is adaptable to everyone's needs, whether doing daily
activities or to improve dance or sport specific techniques.
Joseph
Pilates died in 1967 leaving us a method of exercise which has proven itself
over the past century.
